How to Use the Coast FIRE Calculator India

To use the Coast FIRE calculator in India, enter your age, your planned retirement age, your yearly expenses in retirement, and the value of your mutual funds, stocks, EPF, PPF, and NPS today. The calculator shows your Coast FIRE number: the corpus you need today so it can grow into your full retirement corpus without any further SIP.

  1. Enter your Current Age.
  2. Set your Retirement Age. Most private-sector jobs in India retire employees at 58 or 60. FIRE seekers often target 45 to 55.
  3. Enter Annual Spending in Retirement in rupees, at today's prices. Multiply your monthly expenses by 12. ₹75,000 a month becomes ₹9,00,000 a year. Include health insurance premiums, which rise sharply after 60.
  4. Enter Current Invested Assets. Add equity and debt mutual funds, direct stocks, EPF, PPF, NPS, and gold you hold as an investment. Leave out your house and emergency fund.
  5. Enter your Monthly contribution. This is your total monthly SIP, plus your EPF contribution (yours and your employer's) and any regular PPF or NPS deposits.
  6. Check Advanced Settings. Indian inflation runs higher than in the US or Europe. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) targets 4% CPI inflation within a 2% to 6% band, and long-run household inflation for urban families often runs 6% or more. Set inflation to 6% and growth to 10% to 12% for an equity-heavy portfolio.

How to read your results

  • Coast FIRE number: the corpus you need today.
  • Progress: your current corpus as a share of that number.
  • FIRE Nest Egg: the full corpus needed at retirement, in today's rupees.
  • Coast Age: the age when you can stop your SIPs.
  • Cash Freed: the yearly SIP amount you get back once you coast.
  • Real Return: growth after inflation, the number that drives your plan.
Enter every amount in rupees. Depending on your browser settings, results may show Western comma grouping (7,408,195) in place of lakh grouping (74,08,195). The value is the same.

How the Coast FIRE Calculator India Works

The Coast FIRE calculator India finds your full retirement corpus, then discounts it by your real return for each year until retirement. In India, the gap between growth and inflation matters more than the growth rate alone.

The formula

FIRE Nest Egg = Annual Spending ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate
Real Return (r) = (1 + Growth Rate) ÷ (1 + Inflation Rate) − 1
Coast FIRE Number = FIRE Nest Egg ÷ (1 + r)^Years
VariableMeaningUnit
Annual SpendingYearly household expenses in retirement₹, today's prices
Safe Withdrawal RateFirst-year withdrawal as a share of the corpus%
Growth RateAverage yearly return before inflation% per year
Inflation RateAverage yearly rise in your cost of living% per year
YearsRetirement Age − Current Ageyears

Worked example

Rohan is 28, works in Bengaluru, and wants to retire at 55. He spends ₹75,000 a month and plans for the same lifestyle in retirement. He uses 11% growth, 6% inflation, and a 3.5% withdrawal rate.

  1. FIRE Nest Egg: ₹9,00,000 ÷ 0.035 = ₹2,57,14,286 (about ₹2.57 crore)
  2. Real Return: 1.11 ÷ 1.06 − 1 = 4.72%
  3. Growth factor over 27 years: 3.471
  4. Coast FIRE number: ₹2.57 crore ÷ 3.471 = ₹74,08,195 (about ₹74 lakh)
Rohan has ₹15 lakh across mutual funds and EPF, so he's at 20%. With ₹40,000 a month in SIPs and EPF, he reaches Coast FIRE at age 47. If inflation averages 7% instead of 6%, his Coast FIRE number rises to about ₹95.5 lakh.

Factors that change your result

  • Inflation. A 1% change in inflation moves the Coast FIRE number by roughly 29% in Rohan's case. Use your own family's cost increases, not just the headline CPI.
  • Tax on gains. Long-term capital gains on listed equity and equity mutual funds are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year. Lower your growth rate slightly to allow for it.
  • Lock-ins. EPF, PPF, and NPS have withdrawal rules and lock-in periods. Money you can't access early won't fund an early retirement.
  • Healthcare. Medical inflation in India runs above general inflation. Budget a separate, higher amount for health cover.
  • Rounding. Results are rounded to whole rupees, contributions are added yearly, and Coast Age is shown in whole years.

Coast FIRE Calculator India FAQs

What inflation rate should I use for Coast FIRE in India?

Use 6% inflation as a starting point in India. The RBI targets 4%, but school fees, healthcare, and urban housing costs have risen faster. Test 7% to see how a higher figure affects your plan.

What return should I expect from Indian equity mutual funds?

Most Indian FIRE planners use 10% to 12% for an equity-heavy portfolio. Nifty 50 index returns have historically landed in that range over long periods, with large swings in between. Use a blended lower rate if you hold debt funds, PPF, or EPF.

Should I include EPF and PPF in my Coast FIRE number?

Yes, include EPF and PPF, but only for the years you can access them. EPF pays out in full at 58, and PPF has a 15-year lock-in. If you plan to retire at 45, money in these accounts helps from 58 onward, not before.

What safe withdrawal rate works in India?

A 3% to 3.5% withdrawal rate is a safer choice in India than the US-based 4% rule. Higher and less predictable inflation raises the risk of running out of money. A lower rate means a bigger corpus, but more margin.

Can my monthly SIP count as the monthly contribution?

Yes, enter your total monthly SIP as the monthly contribution. Add your EPF deduction and your employer's share, since both grow your corpus. Step-up SIPs aren't modelled, so update the figure each year as your SIP rises.

How accurate is the Coast FIRE calculator India?

The calculator is accurate for the numbers you enter, but India's higher inflation makes the result more sensitive to assumptions. It uses fixed yearly returns and inflation. Re-run it every year with your actual portfolio value.
